Distant Promises

A new lyrical work for concert band

Distant Promises is a new lyrical work for wind ensemble shaped by breath, resonance, and slowly unfolding color. It lives in the world of modern, choral-inspired wind music while leaning into darker sonorities.

ABOUT THE WORK

The Music

Distant Promises is built around harmonic motion, wind band colors, and pacing that invites conductors and ensemble unlimited expressive opportunites. The piece draws from the expressive world of choral-inspired wind writing while leaning into a darker, more resonant palette of low reeds, brass color, and slowly shifting harmony.

Distant Promises began as a work for trombone choir and has already been performed at Juilliard, the American Trombone Workshop hosted by The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” and the International Trombone Festival.

This new wind ensemble version expands the original sound world into a broader palette of winds.

Full Program Note

Distant Promises takes its inspiration from the experience of traveling west from Denver along Interstate 70, as the distant mountains gradually begin to close in. What first appears as a far-off outline slowly becomes an overwhelming presence, until the road is surrounded and the view ahead narrows.

At the Eisenhower Tunnel, the landscape suddenly gives way to artificial light, concrete, and enclosure. Yet even there, the distant glow at the end of the tunnel suggests what is waiting beyond. When the road finally emerges back into daylight, the view opens all at once to a vast sky, massive mountains, and a sudden flood of color and open space.

The music reflects this sense of anticipation and arrival. Throughout the piece, brief moments of beauty appear and fade, each one seeming to point toward something greater just out of reach. That promise is finally fulfilled in the expansive Maestoso near the end of the work, where the music opens into its fullest and most luminous statement.
